How to greenwash an expressway.
Förbifart Stockholm (Stockholm Bypass) is the world’s largest underground expressway tunnel, the most expensive road in Swedish history. It is currently under preparation for construction. If completed the project will not solve the congestion problem, but instead result in a substantial increase in the use of private cars and trucks as means of transportation and decrease public transportation, biking and walking.
On this site a network of environmental organizations in Sweden want to give you insight into some of the problems with the project. For starters: to name this expressway ”Stockholm bypass” is a smart use of words since only 2% of the traffic will actually pass by the region. This is a road created for commuters in private cars moving within Stockholm region.
This project must be stopped before Sweden can call itself a serious participant in the global fight against climate change.
